Border Patrol Agent Kills U.S. Nurse in Minneapolis Immigration Clash

Fatal Shooting by Border Patrol Sparks Outrage in Minneapolis

In a targeted immigration enforcement operation near Glam Doll Donuts in south Minneapolis on January 24, 2026, Border Patrol agents fatally shot 37-year-old Alex Pretti. DHS stated Pretti approached armed, without identification, and resisted disarmament during an arrest of an undocumented immigrant. Bystander video depicts agents wrestling him to the ground before firing multiple shots.

The incident, the second fatal federal shooting in the city this month amid Operation Metro Surge, ignited widespread protests, a general strike in subzero temperatures, National Guard deployment, and an NBA game postponement. Governor Tim Walz demanded federal agents withdraw from Minnesota, citing escalating tensions and conflicting accounts.
