Mexico made a dream start to their FIFA World Cup 2026™ campaign with an impressive victory over South Africa in front of a passionate home crowd at Mexico City Stadium. Javier Aguirre’s side controlled the match from the opening whistle and showed their attacking intent almost immediately.
Less than five minutes into the game, Mexico created the first clear opportunity. Israel Reyes delivered an excellent cross from the right flank, finding Raul Jimenez inside the penalty area. The experienced striker connected well with the bouncing ball, forcing South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into a sharp save to push the effort around the post.
The early pressure eventually paid off. Midfielder Erik Lira won possession high up the pitch after dispossessing Sphephelo Sithole, creating a dangerous attacking situation for the hosts. The loose ball fell kindly to Julian Quinones, who kept his composure and fired a low shot through the legs of Williams from just inside the box to open the scoring.
Quinones continued to influence the game and later played a key role in Mexico’s second goal, helping his team establish complete control. Backed by an electric atmosphere, Mexico dominated possession, created numerous chances, and delivered a convincing performance that highlighted their ambitions for a successful World Cup campaign on home soil.
